View Full Version : Hotlinking and AB Host

G'day Guys,

Understanding the process of submitting Movie Preview Galleries to MGP's, and TGP's for that matter, it seems reasonable that Hotlinking of Images only, should be permitted on AB Host.

I've tried two methods under the current conditions and in reality neither is a good option. Method one is to place all my movie previews in the same directory as my recip images. The problems this method causes are pretty self evident.

The second method is to place duplicate copies of the recips in each Movie sub directory. The pages load faster, but the additional resources required is not ideal, not to mention the extra time required to upload the same files, time and time again.

I see two possible solutions, one is to allow image files to be hotlinked. This would permit one recip folder, with one set of images. The other method is to provide a Recip Host, for want of a better description, where webmasters could upload recip images and hotlink from that location. The second method wouldn't compromise AB Host and if a file size limit of say 40kb was set, there would be little chance the Recip Host would be used for any other purpose than what it was designed for. (can you believe some TGP's and MGP's have recips around 40kb)?

The other advantage of the second method would be to take some of the load of the AB Host Server. I know it probably would be much, but every little bit helps.

Now, I’m no internet genius, so there may already be an acceptable solution in place. If that’s the case, I’d love to hear what it is. (I know Neo, the best solution is to get my own dedicated host).

Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Oh my lordie Aussie

You just gave us a great idea to bring down the large stress on the AB Host servers.

We are only going to prevent hotlinking on movies only this way all images can be bypass and save tons of time.

WOWOW AUSSIE DA KING!!!

funny...the speeds on AB host since yesterday are blazing now ..almost twice as fast....
as for images when doing galleries...why not just upload a directory with your images to your preview area and link from those? Saves multiple uploads of files and duplicate storage ;)

I would think this a nightmare should the preview server crash or just plain go down temporarily...you will then have two "sites" screwed...preview area gone and galleries with no images (if it should happen soon after getting listed...not good)...correct?

The other thing about loading from the preview sites is it's not reliable. I have a script which asks for preview thumbs from people wanting to submit their galleries and sometimes the images will load and sometimes they won't.

you're absolutely right...you do run the chance of blacklist or perhaps just a non-listing if there are problems with the preview area server you're on and you have placed your recip images in a directory there. One way around all of this is to use simple text links rather than recip images on your galleries. I guess all I'm saying is just to use whatever tools you have at your disposal. Trial and error. And just stick with what works. The alternative is to pay for your gallery hosting. I do. ;)
Hope this helps...

I think our preview servers are very very stable, thats one part of our network thats very stable.

There isn't much to fix on that and we will not touch it because its not broken. Thats the last thing we will tinker with.

One reason why i use text links on all of my galleries, no recip button problems.

One of the boxes we fixed today tweaked it to make it faster.

I'm pleased to say my preview area has enjoyed excellent uptime , speed, and general reliablity. I think if you put your recip images up on the preview box you'll be fine. ;)
Oh..is that even allowed? ehh..better check first...good luck :)

Movie Galleries = Text is the way to go.
Thumbnail Galleries = Image/Table recip they prefer

Most TGPs are old school, they want their shit how they want it. It makes the gallery look a bit funky but I pull high high traffic easy off daily submissions to TGP using their image or table recip on my own server and convert madly, even better than MGPs. On that note most MGPs are much newer and are more 'hip' and don't give much shit about recips as it is more of a pride/google issue so they just want the text if you have any recips at all. So if you're going to submit movie galleries I seriously suggest you do text recips and if you are doing tgps then the opposite. Just some advice.

Another reason why i do text recips on my MGP posts and prefer one to any post to mine...although i do accept clean galleries...but the recip having galleries (with my text recip, of course) will end up in my V.I.P. section closest to the top of my TGP/MGP...thanks Neo.

G'day Guys,

Some good discussion going on here. If it were up to me, I'd use Text, you can do some good stuff with Text, however it's not an issue of what I want to do, it's an issue of all the other TGP's and MGP's and their requirements. They want Image recip's and I have to comply.

On the subject of reliability, My Preview Site just disappeared today. Gone, Nothing, Nada, Kaput! Hope that Tweaking you guys did wasn't the cause!

Pain in the Ring, but that's the Web, I guess.

G'day Rob,

Any news on when this feature may become active? I know you've got a lot of issues to deal with, but thought I'd bug you anyway!

No ETA yet.

Once other issues are fixed we will go to next. But should be soon since we are bringing about another developer so they can concentrate on ABHOST. :)
