I have an avalanche of emails from members saying that I have no member's area... and sure enough, they're right. One of 'em said they contacted support and were told that my server was getting switched...
**what's going on guys?**
or at least, what can I tell these people?
thanks

Sorry to tell you that the server had one driver broken. Unfortunately, your site resides in that driver. We are now moving sites out of the server. I am not sure if there is any backup somewhere. If you like, we can create an empty folder at a new server, or you just wait for the backup. Appologize, Thanks.

I will wait for the backup. I hope to christ there *is* a backup. How long will this take?

That's why i feel it is pretty dumb to back up the galleries instead of the members area.
Or at least back up those sites who has alot of members........

I backup both areas (Dreamweaver MX).
I'm surprised and  that you don't keep that shit backed up man...what were you thinking?
Then again, hindsight is always 20/20.
Hopefully you'll come back stronger than ever...but what a bad way to start out 2004. :(
I feel bad for you smut...but you can't deprive the surfers man...get back in there and kick some ass! :D

Babydred... Smut is not talking about some html-pages.... he has backups of those (I presume)... those are easily uploaded, but he means the movie-files (the uploaded movie content)... if he lost a lot of those files, it's not easily fixed.... btw, I can understand that even if it gets fixed (sooner or later), alot of damage (lost members) has been done already...
I too hope that this is not the end of Smutstack, one of AB's flagship sites... Wishing ya the best of luck smut... :?

Oh yeah...i forgot about the movie files (my bad :( )...i too went through the "lost members" thing when my site was destroyed by a bad server...i still have yet to get them (the lost members) back...and probably never will.
Again, I feel for you Smut.
Take it from one who knows the feeling.

yep...I am losing members hand over frikkin' fist.
I do have all my site design/html/etc backed up, of course... but I only have movie content backed up from the last six months or so... leaving like more than two years of content gone.
this is blowing my mind. and where is support? can I get some kind of timeline on this? and some kind of definitive answer on whether or not there is a backup of my site? even if there's a backup that's several months old, I can probably fill in the gaps. please, christ, someone tell me something.

Were the movies files you lost ab's movies. I mean, did you have your own content or were you using ab's content.
I figure if it was Ab content, can't you just re order the movies and have them copied to your server or re downloaded? I'm sure ab would be cool with that.
So babydred, this happened to you too? Does this happen often? My site's pretty new, but I've put lots of work into it like downloading all the movies and making caps for the parts, writing descriptions and video info for the parts and full movie. hehe, might not sound like alot, but i see lots of sites just throw up some pics, copy the desription from the box and link the parts like "clip1 clip2 clip3 ...... clip15 clip16". I think i might just start doing this since each update is taking me so long now and I don't know if it's worth it. Most members just care about content anyway.
Anyway, kinda started rambling there. Now, about the movie files, were they ab's or not and if so, can't they replace 'em. Also, how often does this sort of thing happen and how prepared should i be? I mean should i start burning cds now or what. This is my first "avs" type site, but I've had many servers my 4 or 5 years online and this has never happened.
see ya,
Brian

Well...the server my members area was on had a disc go bad...so i lost my members area...along with my contentserver folder...thus all my movies.
When they put up the backup of my site it was my version 2 design (i'm now on version 7)...it took forever for me to get my movies back (at least the complete movie, all scenes and parts) some movies were too corrupted to use and it took forever for marco to get back to me with new credits to replace my "bad" movies.
It doesn't happen often...but it does happen.
Smut had alot of his own content up...almost 3 years worth...that's alot of content to lose...and alot of broken pages and downloads to mend...the equivalent of your house burning down and you without a fire-proof safe.

so, WTF, can support please give me some kind of timeframe on whatever is going to happen? is there a backup from anytime within the last 6 months? if so, when will it be in place? I find it amazing that this is all happening at all, and even MORE amazing that tech is not saying one word about it.
I just need to know what's going to happen so I can figure out what my next steps are, and how to proceed.

Hiya smut,
That s*cks man....i really hope they can find you a backup.
Its no fun re-uploading gigs of content, specially if you have
to do it from cdroms (where i put my backups).
It happened to me 2 times, and luckely rob could locate a
(partly) backup once which saved alot of time. The other
one...well i closed that site even tho it contained 11 dvd's
i licensed myself. No hd-crash, but the sites were moved
to another server and never arrived...lost in space. You know
how i found out about the second lost archive? Ab emailed
me "hey, your membersarea is empty, please upload content".
Oke, sh*t happens and i am not perfect too....lol
Good luck!!!!!!!
Take care
See ya, Killer

ok this might be off topic but this is what i think AB should do:
1. Purchase a whole bunch of 200+ gig external harddrives. nice ones.
2. Give webmasters the option of usin some of their payout the purchase one of these back up devices.
3. Charge shipping/handling/ and whatever else you want and then ship it to us.
i know that might sound retarded because if i wanted to i could go out and buy one of those drives right now. but im lazy. and once i get that AB money in my hands it goes right into the bank. so if you give me the option to spend some of it before i actually receive anything i would be more likely to do so and doing so by buying back up devices is a great way to do it.
plus it would help AB stop so much of the complaining about backups when they can say "we gave you he chance to buy some from us". now you have nothing to complain about.
just my $1.50.

ps. im writing this on a secure government computer at my work. shame on me! :o

Hey Stack,
Im so sorry about it man, i have had the very same thing happen to one of my sites 3 times in the past year. And last time i simply had my html on back up and i finally after a few days got my content server back up. But they lost all of the AB content but only a few of my own content. It was a bitch. And now having to back -up gigs and gigs of content from AB too is a very time consumming process and you had best just buy at least 100 cd to burn all of the content on! Dude you have my very most sympathy! I have seen it happen over and over again! And unfortunately to me most of the damn time. But we must endeavor to persevere!
Hang in there! 8) Much Luck!

Hey smut, your members really bailing on you that quickly? You would think that there would be enough sites to keep them occupied while yours is getting retooled. That was always one of the better parts of working with AB, if your site goes down, members will still have something to do as opposed to them paying for your site alone and then your both fucked when something like this happens.
Shit happens to the best of us man and it sucks but I along with the others would hate to see you leave AB over something like this. Get on IRC, there's always tech guys there. That's usually where I go with problems, these forums aren't much of a help.

Hey Kyller,
I know it, I wouldn't want to leave, either. AB gave me my start, and my loyalty still lays with them. It is just incredibly frustrating not to have any support whatsoever. And while AB definitely has its share of good sites, like yours, it has SO many terrible ones that I can see getting frustrated as a member and leaving.
I dunno man, we'll work it out. I have far too much emotional attachment to the site to just let it die, but jesus. I just am at a total loss on how to proceed.

One step at a time is the only way to proceed smut (although it's alotta steps to get back to where you were)...i'd hate to see ya go...you're a mainstay here...an anchor site...it would be a loss for AB to lose you (at least i think so  ).
I know my site ain't all that grand :( ...but i'm working on it :) ...with each version i put up, the better the next one will be  ...
After all the work you put into your site...it would be a loss to let it die..step to it man...start with what you have left and go from there.

we havent forgotten about you smut. we just changed topics over to shady webmasters and the likes. without you chiming in we have no idea where you're at with your sites. if youre still getting the run around let us know. if we all bitch together then maybe someone might hear us. and i doubt this would help but i got 9 movies credits you can "use" if you want. tell me what you want/need and you can fxp it from my sites to yours.

Something like 6 credits here.
Yeah, if AB can't help then we will try...i have some loose credits around to...let me know what ya wanna do... :D
I'm not using them for their respective sites because the content hasn't been updated yet.
