If your using mpegs then I suggest you try TMPGEnc. Its a great tool and with my compression rates I can make a 20 second clip with a file size of around 1.5mb.

Its really easy to use, you can convert most files (wmv, avi, mov) into mpegs then chop them to the size you want using just this software and best of all its free :D

what settings are you using for tmpge?

i can only get a 6mb file down to a 4mb.

ive used the lowest quality and 64 sound still doesnt make it smaller then when i had it to higher settings.

what settings are you using for TMPGenc?

Settings:

Video information:
Resolution - 288x224, framerate - 29.97 fps, Bitrate - average 450kbps

Audio information:
Sampling Frequency - 32000 Hz, Number of channels - 2ch Stereo, Bitrate - 192 kbps

Produces - 4.67 MB (average) per 1 minute, less than 2mb for a 20 sec clip.

Dred's step-by-step instructions:

Open TMPGenc,
go into the settings button (at the bottom) and plug in these values under the corresponding tab,
When done click ok, then save (name them something you'll remember) when you do this setting will appear under "other" in the project wizard (i have my wizard enabled),

(Once you set up the project wizard...you won't have to do the settings again)

Click on the browse button for the video file, choose your movie file folder,
in the "Files of type" drop down, scroll down to and choose "all files",
choose your video part and let it load, click next.

Source range is where you do your cutting.

When you start cutting get your start frame number (at the top of the clip cutting page)
add 929 to that number (use a calc if you have to, i do) to get a 30 second clip, 629 for 20 secs, 329 for 10secs clips
(You can check to see if it's xx seconds by looking again at the top of the page)

Make sure you "move to end" then "set end".

Clip frame is used to cut the black lines from the sides and top of the video...use it if you need to...your choice.

I don't want to throw too much at you, but you can also fix the brightness and color in your clips.
Under "other settings", then "advanced", then "simple color correction".
This is something others don't take the time to do and they have those crappy way too dark clips.

Name the output file and i also batch encode all of my clips in one shot...choose batch encode to make all your clips first, then hit "ok", after the last clip is made change it to "start encoding immediately" and hit "okay"...then let it work.

Resolution - 320x240, framerate - 29.97 fps, Bitrate - average 550kbps

Audio information:
Sampling Frequency - 32000 Hz, Bitrate - 64 kbps

Just play around and see what produces the best clips.

Dred

Yeah, be interesting to see if the bigger movie size settings increase sales or not. Personally I've always used the larger sizes and reduced the sound quality so the sizes aren't too big.
